With his Tesla factory in China, Elon in effect is bolstering the Chinese economy, allowing them to be a rival military and economic power for Communist China that has vowed to take over Taiwan! It's been said that China is building a copy of SpaceX's Starship. Was that part of the price for allowing Tesla locate in China? What will China do if they develop a Starship to?

    • @w0mbles Dealing with it refers to lower emissions and on that front both countries are both doing more than Australia. Calling both environmental wastelands and not labelling the Australia the same is simply absurd given it's emissions and the damage it has done and continues to do to the environment. Australia has a near perfect setup for rail transport actually just like Russia. It has large population centres with vast wastes between which suits rails extremely well. It's extremely comparable. I'd critique Canada in the same manner. Australia simply has been lacking in these areas and there's really no excuse. Building railways or dams doesn't require extreme authoritarian measures that's a silly deflection. Australia built large roads crossing these areas rail doesn't suddenly require genocide or authoritarianism. It's silly to deflect criticism in this manner all EU countries should be doing more too but Australia is one of the worst offenders at the moment with very few excuses for it.

    • @Galdrack First of all, Russia isn't dealing with it. Russia is an economic and environmental wasteland. (And China is an environmental wasteland.) Secondly, Australia has very different economies of scale. Population in China is vastly more dense, and so rail can be more effective. It also helps them that they have an authoritarian government which will raze entire towns to the ground to make way for railways, damns. If you want to do some Australia bashing, pick a more realistic comparison. e.g. Canada.

    • @w0mbles It's little excuse in many ways. There's way more solar power to be generated in Australia than all the countries you listed which makes it much more wasteful that the country is so reliant on fossil fuels (and is a big exporter of them too). The travel distances can be significant but it's all the more reason proper rail infrastructure should be made to reduce the emissions between those distances. China and Russia both deal with this on a much vaster scale without the same emissions per capita or kilometre (Australia is one of the worst per capita in the world). Not every country has to deal with it the same way but Australia has been pretty terrible overall, it's a country that still elects climate denialists afterall.

Although I do disagree about the "little excuse", because unlike, say the UK or Singapore or even NZ, the costs of doing almost anything industrial in Australia are much higher due to the distances involved. e.g. trucking/flight times to any of our capital cities, let alone country areas. A better metric would be energy efficiency per kilometer.

  • As a mining engineer, you've got a bit of an error on reserves and resources. Mineral reserves just mean a mine has that much left to go, it doesn't mean production is being held back. You can only mine at a certain speed and you need to mine from the top downwards. You can't build a mine on a short life, you'd never get the financing

At the time 6:02, the topic you are talking about is the expansion of Si through alloying with Li, but you were showing an expansion of Battery through gas during thermal runaway. I think the expansion of Si would look different, it simply cause the Si active materials fall from Cu current collector, thats all.

  • Not only that, but we're just focusing on Tesla now. The goal is to have the entire automotive industry off of fossil fuels. So my guess is that once the major car companies are re-tooled for 100% EV production. Strip mining will increase exponentially and mineral reserves will decrease in kind. We're basically adding 'Big Battery' to the 'Big Oil' list of entities that will exploit non-renewable resources with relative impunity because of our dependence on them.

  • The video is a little misleading on the artisanal mining part: While 70% of the world's output is mined in Congo, only an estimated 15-30% of Congolese cobalt is mined this way. So at most roughly 20% of the world supply is mined this way every year. The numbers also fluctuate in line with cobalt prices, as, somewhat counterintuitively, that kind of production is not competitive when prices are low. Despite the usage of what basically amounts to slave labour, it is not able to compete with the highly industrialized processes of huge mining facilities as long as there is no supply crunch for cobalt. So while the geopolitical problems are still a major concern (as the video points out, Congo is a notoriously unstable country after all), the development of more mining facilities in the region can actually help mitigate the problem of artisanal mining

  • A good analysis of the raw material supply challenges facing battery supply: equally daunting is the basic metal demand requirements for rapid expansion in solar and wind power of the magnitude required to create the green energy revolution. In the era of NIMBYism and lack of basic knowledge of how "stuff" is actually made, the amount of increased mining required to even begin to meet the mind boggling demand will result in even more environmental elitism, as the wealthy countries want nothing to do with the fundamental industries (mining, processing, manufacturing, etc.) in their sight or local areas, forcing even more potential exploitation of the poorer countries of the world. WE need change, to be sure, but it has a price that all must pay, and it is sometimes not just in terms of money. Recently, a very large underground copper mine project in Arizona (Resolution Copper, Superior, AZ) had a critical step in their already decade long permitting process arbitrarily halted by the new administration. I understand the desire for a clean environment - I want that too, but when a state of the art mine development project that has been vetted by multiple administrations and has already had $2B spent on studies is halted because it's "incomplete" in the eyes of some, that mine's future development (potentially 25% of US demand could be supplied from it), it is on life support. That means the the additional demand for (in this case copper, but plug in your metal of choice) will be supplied (if it can be) by less efficient , lvery likely more polluting suppliers in parts of the world that likely already have a disproportionate share of the environmental cost that the world requires to not only feed, clothe and house billions of people (with billions more to come), but also to fulfill the ethical duty to elevate all people everywhere out of poverty. The realities of how material objects are made are not foolish concerns: steel and cement are very mature products essential to modern life (and green energy and infrastructure and elevating people out of poverty (think infrastructure) ,with very little room left for process optimization in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emission (cement emits CO2 as a byproduct of the chemical transformation of raw materials to cement, exclusive of the energy source used to produce it). So, great video: I like to see one of equivalent quality on the raw material challenges of green energy transformation. Notice that I haven't mentioned exotic metals like rare earths - although not really rare, the processing of these ores are very energy intensive and very dirty in terms of nasty chemicals. BTW, China dominates rare earths not only because of supply but also due to proprietary processing technology and much more liberal environmental regs. It behooves us all to know that the transition to carbon free energy is not without societal cost - not that it shouldn't be done, but I think society as a whole needs to know what this massive transformation will entail.

    • Along with what you’ve said is the scale of transitioning to a net-zero carbon dioxide emission energy supply by the year 2050. There’s an article by Roger Pielke that came out in Oct 2019 that shows what would be involved. Starting the day after the article was posted, 3 nuclear power plants equivalent in output to the Florida Turkey Point Nuclear facility would need to be built every 2 days to reach that goal. At the same time decommissioning a Turkey Point Nuclear facility equivalent in non-renewable energy production every day would be required. He substituted wind power for nuclear and came up with 1500 wind turbines to be put in use every day until 2050. Nothing wrong with moving to cleaner energy but such an unrealistic goal of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 should be addressed as well.

  • QPM.ASX will provide 90% or more of that battery shopping list without the Geopolitical Congo issues, barring Lithium that is abundant in the market for the possible foreseeable future. QPM Punches above its weight in battery metals supply. It is a small Australian (Queensland) company called Queensland Pacific Metals. Production slated for 2023. Good value on the ASX for around $0.10c AUD. Could we see a 10X + on that stock;-)

  • Earlier in Tesla history I recall Elon saying his objective was accelerating the worldwide transition to EV. He even said he would make Tesla patents freely available to all. I doubt Tesla will ever produce 40M cars a year but I applaud Elon for great success at his early goal. It is amazing and very important. The many large resourceful auto companies worldwide Europe, Japan, S. Korea, China and N.America have redirected capital to EV technology including batteries and have firm plans for transition to EV. I think Elon is a jerk sometimes but I would give him a medal or maybe knighthood.

  • I think urging big companies to be mindful of inhumane labor practices is the correct thing to do. However, I believe it is unfair to place the burden of action of them when the true responsible party is the mines' host country. Big corps can only do so much and what if they just outright pull cobalt out of their supply chain altogether? Then the laborers who were mistreated before will now lose their income to, adding insult to injury. This should be a joint-nation, joint venture effort to ensure humane labor laws are enforce to protect the people responsible for giving us the resources we need to modernize our societies.

Protect east directed drivers from driving into the sun in the morning and west directed drivers from the evening sun. 2. Keep most of the rain and snow off the highways during bad weather. 3. Keep cars in the shade, reducing their need for AC cooling in the summer. 4. Reduce the heat from the sun that currently is developed from above the pavement. 5. The government already has the right of way so it doesn't have to acquire more land in order to build solar panel arrays. 6. combined with in pavement charging, could charge electric cars while driving.

I am more interested in buying a hydrogen fuel cell car (Toyota already makes one, but only sold in CA) in future, prices will come down when infrastructure is up, or perhaps a gas car that runs of a high tech biofuel. I use to use biodiesel in my diesel truck until I found out it came from palm oil & caused deforestation. Making biodiesel out of algae is less environmentally impactful.
